Chapter Ten

Athen returned to the table. He showed the others the photo frame. “Camera,” he whispered. “I don’t think it’s wired for sound.” Then he called Cricket. Nobody said anything until Cricket came back inside and examined the frame.

“Are there more?” he asked, his eyes black with fury.

“Yeah.” Athen was surprised. “Two others. It’s a set. Grady and I put them away several days ago.”

“Get them for me.” Cricket covered the camera with his thumb then turned the frame over and with a gentle tug, picked away at a corner covered in tape. “These are state of the art, but they’re visual only. No sound.”

Soup snapped her fingers. “I saw something like this in the latest Bosch series. The wife who had her husband bumped off had no idea he’d been watching her from a spycam in a picture frame.”

“Where did Tyler keep these?” Paulie asked.

Athen grimaced. “In our bedroom.”

“Ah. Then he must have realized he wasn’t receiving images anymore. That’s why he’s been invading your house.” Cricket nudged Athen. “Go on. Git. I wanna see the other frames.”

Athen felt numb as he went to retrieve the other photo frames. He could hear Soup and the captain asking about the home invasion.

“What’s going on?” Lucy asked a couple of times.

Athen pulled the two remaining photos. Both were pictures of Tyler. One from a movie set, in a WWII costume, the other was Tyler on a beach somewhere in sunglasses. Despina had wanted them in her bedroom until she discovered a passion for the Kpop band BTS and the singer Dua Lipa. There wasn’t enough room on her desk, bookshelves or her dresser for all the photos she printed from her computer and framed. She’d agreed to give up the photos. Now Athen was angrier than he’d been before he realized Tyler had been spying on them all.

He returned to the table with the other frames. The jeweled embellishments on all there had been elaborate coverups for pinpoint cameras.

Cricket dismantled them all. “He realized they were missing. Exactly when did you put them away?”

Athen ran a hand over his face. Ever since the coronavirus outbreak he kept telling himself not to do it but kept doing it. “Like I said, several days ago. About four, five days. Less than a week”

“Around the time Despina gave Tyler your house keys,” Paulie said. “Do you think he had anything to do with Natasha’s disappearance?”

“Good question,” Athen said. “Let’s bring him in.” He was so incensed at this point, he didn’t know what to think beyond wanting to get the hell out of this house as soon as possible. And getting Tyler James off the streets.

“So what’s going on?” Lucy asked.

Athen gestured to Cricket. “It’s your story to tell.”

“It’s our case. You have as much right to it as I do.”

“Go ahead,” Athen said. He drew another chair from the wall over to the table. Cricket sat and gave everyone a brief rundown of the Allie Madden case.

“Five years ago, Athen and I were brought in as US Marshals to work on a missing person case.
